Have you ever noticed that some people just seem to be lucky? Is it that they are the chosen ones? Do they have a horseshoe firmly planted up their derrie’re as described by many a golfer? Some people do seem to be blessed and fortune favors them but there are proven ways to create your own luck. As Bruce Springsteen said, “When it comes to luck, you make your own”. Here are the top 3 ways to create your own luck.
Hard Work
“Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get”. Ray Kroc said that and for those not familiar with that name, he was the man who brought McDonald’s from a franchise of 6 locations to the global franchise we now know today. There is no substitute for hard work, this is certainly not a profound statement but sometimes we need to be reminded of that when we aren’t feeling particularly lucky. As Thomas Jefferson said, “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it”.
Look for Luck
Being aware of your surroundings, recognizing opportunities and acting on them are a huge part of creating your own luck. There was a study performed in Britain where a $20 pound note (Britain’s currency) was left on the sidewalk. Of the 10 participants, 6 saw the note and picked it up while 4 of them did not. The participants that had filled out a survey prior and the 6 that found the note considered themselves to be lucky while the “unfortunate” 4 did not. Luck is not something you will just stumble upon but rather there if you are open to it.
Givers Gain
When you give freely without any thought to what you will receive, it’s amazing how much you will receive. The universe is just built that way. Some people may think it is “woo woo” but I have experienced it my entire life. When you are a giver, you tend to surround yourself with other givers. This giving creates incredibly generous relationships that lead to connections, advice, and opportunities that most would consider to be “luck”.
“There are rules to luck, not everything is chance for the wise; luck can be helped by skill”. -Baltasar Gracian That quote has been around since the 1600’s and still is so applicable today. It feels good to be lucky, it’s fun and exciting. Put yourself in the best possible position to be lucky by working hard, keeping a lookout and giving. Three things that are firmly in our control to choose to be lucky every single day.
