The universal truth that I arrive at every single morning is that we have choices to make. Does that mean all the chores and honey dos that we “have” to do every day is going to be awesome? Do we find joy in the job we go to and the workouts that we do to stay in shape?. Do I really believe that they can all be fun? I full heartedly believe that, not “fool heartedly”, but fully believe we can choose fun in every aspect of our life. Here are some examples to help prove the point.
Dancing With Dishes
One of my chores or duties in my household is doing the dishes. Somebody has to do them and I am the chosen one to get those babies shining again after each use. I don’t know a lot of people that love to do dishes and I have dreaded it on occasion myself. What I do love to do is listen to music and dance. When that “dread” creeps in, I throw in the headphones and dance with my dishes. Before you know it, the dishes are done and I’m in a great mood sliding around the kitchen. This can be applied to cleaning toilets, taking out the trash, and vacuuming as it is the same scene when I’m called to do any of those tasks.
Human beings love to play games. It’s in our DNA to create games to play, hop on a video game console or break out the old board games. This idea of gamification can be applied to the work force as well. You have a stack of emails to get through, no problem, how fast can I get it done? Need to make those 200 sales calls and the phone looks like it weighs 500 pounds. Gamify it by taking 1 jellybean out of a vase and put it in another each time you make a call. It takes your mind off the idea of having to make a call and shifts it to how fast you can move them over or what patterns can I create as I drop them in. It also doesn’t suck that you get to eat a few jellybeans along the way.
Going on a trip is awesome but “ugh”, I have to pack first. How many times have you heard your spouse or significant other, mutter those words? Turn it into a packing party! Just saying the word party brings a smile to our face and changes your perspective from “have to” into “get to”. Turn on some music, envision what you will be wearing on that amazing vacation, and/or pour yourself a beverage and have fun with it. Try applying the word party to virtually any task and watch how your mood shifts. That one word makes everything better.
We are not on this earth for all that long, so why not choose fun. One of my favorite sayings is “We are in complete control of two things, our attitude and our activity. How’s yours today?”. Check in with yourself and see how you are approaching the chores in life. Are you choosing fun or are you miserably grinding through each second? Let that inner child come out and dance, sing, and smile during those tedious tasks. You will be happier and so will everyone around you because having fun is contagious!
