Do What You Say You’re Going to Do: The Simple Habit That Builds Unshakable Trust
“Do what you say you’re going to do.” Learn why doing what you say builds trust, accountability, and integrity, and how consistent follow through can transform your leadership, business, relationships, and life.

What if one of the biggest advantages in business, leadership, relationships, and life came down to one incredibly simple habit?

Do what you say you’re going to do.

In the first episode of Season 2 of Let’s Go Win, JM Ryerson returns to a lesson his parents taught him early in life and one that has shaped the businesses he has built, the relationships he has developed, and the way he approaches leadership.

The principle sounds almost too simple. Keep your commitments. Follow through. If you tell someone you are going to do something, do it. And if you fail to follow through, own it without excuses and make sure you do better the next time.

The reason this matters is trust. Every commitment you keep makes a deposit into someone’s trust in you. Every promise you repeatedly break begins to withdraw from it. This applies to customers, employees, business partners, friends, spouses, and family. In leadership and sales, your ability to follow through can become one of the clearest ways to differentiate yourself.

But JM points out that there is one person we often let down more than anyone else: ourselves. We promise ourselves we will go to the gym, lose the weight, write the book, eat healthier, become a better parent, or finally pursue the goal we have been talking about. Then fear, discomfort, distraction, or life gets in the way.

JM challenges listeners to recognize fear rather than allowing it to quietly control their decisions. Write the fear down. Acknowledge it. Get rid of the paper if that helps you create a mental break from it. Then take action in the opposite direction. Courage grows through use. Every time you follow through despite discomfort, you begin creating a new pattern.

The same principle applies to how we set expectations with other people. JM encourages leaders to stop overpromising and underdelivering. Make realistic commitments and then exceed them. Saying less and delivering more builds confidence. Promising everything and consistently delivering less eventually damages trust.

Winning is not about being perfect. Everyone will occasionally miss a commitment. What matters is how you respond. Own the mistake. Skip the excuses. Correct it. Then follow through the next time.

Because at its core, doing what you say you are going to do is about more than productivity.

It is about integrity.

And the promises you keep to yourself may be the most important ones of all.

Key Takeaways

  • 1

Do what you say you’re going to do. Consistent follow through builds trust in business, leadership, relationships, and life.

  • 2

Accountability starts with ownership. When you miss a commitment, acknowledge it without making excuses and correct the behavior.

  • 3

Keep the promises you make to yourself. Your personal goals deserve the same commitment you give to other people.

  • 4

Take action through fear. Recognize the fear, write it down, remove it, and take one action in the direction of your commitment.

  • 5

Underpromise and overdeliver. Set realistic expectations and then exceed them rather than making promises you cannot consistently keep.

  • 6

Consistency builds integrity. Winning is not about perfection. It is about showing up, doing the work, and becoming a little better every day.
