Recently I went on a leadership trip and it was decided prior to the trip that we would have no set itinerary or agenda. It sounded like a great idea, no one had to stress about timelines or getting things done. We would just enjoy one another’s company and talk about business or leadership when the time was right. It ended up being quite the opposite, every single hour someone would ask what was on the “itinerary” or “what needs to get done”. As humans we need structure and organization. What we really needed was to spice up the normal agenda to ensure it wasn’t the same meetings as before. I believe our routines are the same, we need structure but sometimes we need to spice it up.
Try Something New
If you are feeling like your routine could use a boost, then look to incorporate something new. We love to explore and learn new things, so why not commit to trying that new “thing” into your daily routine. It could be learning a new language, taking a cold shower, trying the newest exercise fad, or giving that hobby you always meant to try a go. There is no right or wrong answer but adding something new can reenergize your routine. Change is exciting and can make your daily routine that much more appealing.
Do Something You Love
So often I find that my clients have forgotten that their daily routine is for them. Don’t do it just because you think you have to but rather because you want to. The whole point of the routine is to maximize your day and ultimately your life. Make sure to incorporate doing what you love into that routine. Find an exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise or if you want to spend more time with your kids, invite them to be part of your routine. The more you love what your routine is, the more you will want to do it.
Celebrate Your Wins
The definition of celebration is “the action of marking one’s pleasure at an important event or occasion by engaging in enjoyable, typically social, activity”. Why not celebrate every single day? You woke up, that’s reason for celebration. You crushed your daily routine, boom, time for a high five! Remember to reward yourself and fire up those endorphins. Almost everyone loves to celebrate, so why not do it for yourself and watch those around you join in on the fun!
Routines are a great thing to have and allow us to stress less, have better health, and be more productive overall. That does not mean that routines should be boring.
